Which Eye Creams Are Most Effective?
One of the earliest signs of aging occurs around the eyes. This area is susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles because the skin is extremely delicate. The way our skin ages is dependent on many factors such as, genetics, environmental factors and one's age. As we age our skin naturally produces less collagen resulting in decreased suppleness. Coupled with this, elastin fibers start to lose their elasticity resulting in the inability to maintain firmness. The residual damage sustained by years of stressors (sun, toxins, and stress) accelerates the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, also know as crow’s feet. Unfortunately, wrinkles are not the only problem facing delicate skin around the eyes. Swelling and puffiness can cause drooping of the lid and under-eye area, dark circles can also make a woman look older and more tired. Dr. Troccoli, M.D., F.A.A.D. a Harvard educated dermatologist states "that as women age they can also lose fat under the eyes, giving the appearance of hollowed out eyes. These issues can continue to get worse as a woman ages unless there is action taken to stop and reverse these eye issues." A skin care regimen that includes an anti-wrinkle eye cream is essential.
How Have Eye Creams Evolved?
Eye creams have changed dramatically over the years. They have gone from stand alone formulations targeting one specific issue to formulations that targets a multitude of concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness in a single product. These technologically advanced, high quality eye creams contain ingredients designed to increase hydration, reduce wrinkles, lighten dark circles and diminish puffiness that will dramatically reduce the visible signs of aging.Without an intense level of hydration, fragile skin can stretch and crease due to tightness and dryness of the skin. Dermatologists recommend looking for hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid - used in moisturizers to boost hydration dramatically. Peptides such as Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 (Argireline), Palmitoyl Oligopeptide and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 (Matrixyl 3000) have clinical evidence of wrinkle reduction up to 45%. Syn-Ake is another powerful ingredient that has been shown to diminish wrinkle depth by 52%. For women suffering from puffiness, products that contain arnica, chamomile, or cucumber extracts may help keep swelling to a minimum. Recent research has shown that Vitamin K can also be a powerful tool in fighting dark circles.
There are an extraordinary amount of choices when it comes to topical eye cream products. How do you choose? You should use a product that has key ingredients backed by scientific evidence addressing your specific eye care needs. Look for ingredients that effectively diminish fine lines and wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness while increasing skin’s hydration and firmness. Remember, the eyes are our most alluring, expressive feature and keeping the eye area smooth and radiant will help us stay attractive and engaging throughout life.

Tips For Maintaining Proper Skin Care For Delicate Eye Area
- Sleep with a pillow under your head for at least 7 - 8 hours to reduce dark circles forming around the eye. The slight elevation will prevent fluids from accumulating the eye area thus preventing dark circles from forming.
- Cleanse the skin before applying any products. Apply the eye cream when the skin is still moist. Using heat of the fingertip to warm the eye cream, and then use the middle finger to gently press the eye cream on the eye skin area.
- Avoid wearing your contact lenses for long periods of time giving unnecessary strain to the eye’s skin.
- Protect your eyes during peak sun times: Sunglasses should be worn whenever outside. It’s especially important to wear sunglasses in the early afternoon and at higher altitudes, where UV light is more intense.
- Refrain from drinking alcoholic and caffeinated beverages as these can cause dehydration. Drink plenty of water. Six to 8 glasses of water daily is recommended.
